Intel CEO: American companies should keep 1/3 of their chips in the US for production

According to news on April 13th, US local time on Monday, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger (Pat Gelsinger) said that the company is beginning to negotiate the production of chips for automakers to help alleviate the idleness of chips in auto factories Supply shortages.

Gelsinger said that Intel is negotiating with companies that design chips for automakers and hopes to produce these chips at Intel's factories. The company's goal is to start production within six to nine months. Earlier Monday, Gelsinger met with White House officials to discuss semiconductor supply chain issues.

Intel is one of the last companies in the semiconductor industry to design and manufacture its own chips. The company said last month that it will open factories to external customers and establish factories in the United States and Europe to challenge the dominance of Asian chip makers such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics.

Gelsinger told White House officials during the meeting that Intel will open existing factories to automotive chip companies to provide more direct help to solve the chip shortages that have caused current production interruptions in Ford and General Motors plants.

Gelsinger said: "We hope that some of the problems can be alleviated. We don't need to spend three or four years to build factories, but only six months to certify new products. We have already started with some key issues. Contact with parts suppliers."

Gelsinger did not disclose the names of parts suppliers, but said that these chips can be produced at Intel's factories in Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Israel or Ireland.

Gelsinger also hopes that American companies will account for one-third of the semiconductors produced in the United States, which is currently about 12%. He said: "I believe our goal should be that American companies should place one third of semiconductor production in the United States."

The top factories currently manufacturing chips are located in Taiwan Province of China and South Korea. TSMC and Samsung Electronics are the two largest foundry companies, controlling more than 70% of the market. Trendforce, a market research company, estimates that TSMC produces chips for companies such as Apple and Amazon, and holds 54% of the foundry market.

Gelsinger said that although manufacturing in the United States is important, he also believes that American companies should have intellectual property rights in advanced microchip manufacturing. He said: "We not only hope that American companies will manufacture chips in the United States, but more importantly, we will have overall control over the technology behind it."

The Biden administration is advancing its $2 trillion infrastructure proposal, which provides $50 billion in funding for the US semiconductor industry. He regards the current chip shortage that plagues the global economy as a "national security issue." Biden said at the beginning of the meeting: "Today I received letters from 23 senators and 42 congressmen from both parties. They all support the ‘American Chip’ program."

In February of this year, the White House also ordered a review of the US supply chain of several core products, including semiconductors. The 2021 national defense bill includes the chip bill, which calls on the federal government to encourage semiconductor manufacturing, but does not provide funding. (Little)
